About the Artist
Darrell is a Firefighter Paramedic in North Texas. When he is not fighting fires or tending to the sick, he has armed himself in just the last 3 years with a self-taught passion for drawing with graphite pencils. He combines his passion of art with his love of firefighting and sports to create art intended to
- provoke thoughts of a period in time
- an unforgettable moment
- as an inspiration for the future.
At first, he continued to go against the norm and stayed with traditional mediums that seem to be fading in this new generation of computers and technology. Many of his drawings take approx. 30 to 40 hours due to all the time and detail he put into each picture. After a couple of years of honing his pencil skills he started realizing he had to take breaks from drawing each detailed traditional picture due to being just mentally drained from drawing. Knowing the key to getting better at art was to continue to draw he started searching other ways to express his renewed love for drawing that could refresh him between those long traditional drawings. He began reflecting back on what he loved as a kid, drawing sports cartoons and cartoons influenced by Saturday mornings and MAD magazine. With his mind set, pencil sharpened, and very little sleep, Darrell continues to draw on a daily bases carving out a style that people will recognize as his. Darrell has enjoyed the new challenge and loves having a variety of drawing styles to appease his over active creative side and of course his fans.
He is married to his best friend for over 23 years and as he always says “We are still newlyweds!” If that is not enough Darrell and his wife, own a family business. They manufacture Salsa, Sauces, and Hot Sauces. Darrell has 2 kids in college and one in high school. All 3 still hang around to assist in the family business that was founded in 2005 known as Big Dawg Salsa.
Darrell’s drawing story is a little different than most. While he drew a lot in Elementary School and Junior High he put the pencils down before High School and did not pick them back up until around April 2008, about 28 years later. He found his long lost passion of drawing to be a new relaxing way to take a break from firefighting and the hustle and bustle the family business was piling on.
June 08′ was his first attempt at Pencil Realism and has been hooked ever since.
Now accepting new clients that are interested in possible collaboration for personal drawings, exhibits, and charity auctions.
